Grape ID: Códega do Larinho — The aromatic freshness of the Douro in its purest form.

Nov 28th 25

Códega do Larinho is one of the most unique white grape varieties in the Douro. Medium ripening, productive, and deeply connected to the region's slopes, it stands out for its vibrant aromatic character and the elegance with which it expresses itself in both table wines and white Port wines.

With large, speckled berries and a thick skin — rich in phenolic compounds — this grape variety produces wines with a citrus colour and complex aroma, where delicate floral notes intersect with expressive tropical fruit, such as pineapple and passion fruit, and a fresh touch of citrus. Its acidity is moderate but always offset by an intense aromatic profile and remarkable persistence.

Traditionally cultivated in the Douro region, especially in old post-phylloxera vineyards, it is also found in the Dão and Lisbon regions. Its versatility allows it to shine on its own or in blends — it is often combined with Rabigato or Gouveio to enhance balance and aromatic expression.

It is highly valued in the production of White Port, thanks to its natural ability to generate alcohol content and the abundant aromatic character it imparts to blends. In table wines, it displays a bright and modern personality, with a style that appeals to both traditional consumers and new connoisseurs.

Códega do Larinho proves that the Douro does not live by red grape varieties alone. In its wines, we find energy, aromatic depth, and a faithful reflection of the terroir. A grape variety that combines tradition and modernity — and continues to assert itself as a true treasure of Portuguese viticulture.
